a few years ago i realized that carving pumpkins wasn't as fun as i pretended it was. after all that work you end up throwing them out after a few weeks because they get that wrinkly-old-man-pumpkin-face. you know what i mean?
this year i decided to have fun decorating my pumpkins with:
after halloween i'll just wipe that jack-o-lantern face right off of that chalkboard pumpkin and draw something more november appropriate.
they were all very easy, a bit of glue, glitter, and leftover paint is all it took to jazz up my ordinary pumpkins.
the chevron pumpkin took the most work, but with a little masking tape, my trusty scissors, and some white spray paint i had on-hand, it was actually quite fun. and the color possibilities are endless: eggplant, navy blue, and yellow would all be fun with the orange. and if you feel you can't commit to painting, you could even get the look by just leaving tape on the pumpkin. green frog tape would look fantastic. wouldn't washi tape add another element of fun to pumpkins? i'm thinking washi-plaid...
are you doing anything fun with your pumpkins this year?
the chevron design is so cute! I carved a pumpkin this year but I'd like to try painting the other side of it like this. I wonder if I can use anything besides spray paint?
ReplyDeleteThanks Alice! I bet any paint would work, I just didn't have the patience to paint it by hand :) I'm sure it will turn out great though!

DeleteI paint pumpkins each year (my toddler can do that without me freaking out about knives around her). We use acrylic paint because it is water soluble so easy clean-up and it works well. After, you have to spray the pumpkin with basically lacquer so the paint will remain waterproof. For older kiddies, or adults who want to play, oil based paints would be better for weathering the weather... I will say, however, that the areas that were painted ended up sinking into the pumpkin after a week or two, so not sure it saves your pumpkin for all of November. Also, you don't want to plant a pumpkin covered in lacquer.
ReplyDeletemy pumpkins lasted all the way through november, who knew?! i ended up throwing them away to make room for christmas decor :)

I am so doing this! Love chevron (and glitter!) Glittered chevron pumpkin perhaps?!!? Here in AZ our pumpkins are lucky to survive one night and the effort isn't worth carving the night before Halloween!

how did you keep the tape straight?? i'm trying to do it but i keep zigzagging down the pumpkin. measurements?
ReplyDeleteI made this last year, so unfortunately I don't have any measurements, sorry! My rows were not perfect by any means, but I found the chevron pattern to be really forgiving. I'm pretty sure I cut a bunch of strips and then had to shorten a few if the pattern started getting too wonky, so each strip ended up being a little different. The strips going down and diagonal were longer than the strips going up and diagonal, if that makes sense. I'm sure yours will turn out great!

This Halloween activity is very interesting. We don't do it here in our place, maybe because we find it unethical to carve pumpkins as if we're making fun of a vegetable. But seriously, I am amazed with how talented those who could carve. Thanks for these painting ideas , found it while I was searching for pumpkin carving ideas . I would love to list them on my collection please. Cheers and good day always!
